The ANMCV has as its general objective the promotion, defence, dignification and representation of Local Government, and especially:
- The representation and defence of the Municipalities before the Organs of sovereignty, namely presenting proposals of measures aiming the strengthening of Local Power;
- The accomplishment of studies and projects about relevant subjects of Local Power;
- The creation of services destined to the pursuit of its purposes and of its members;
- The development of training and information actions for elected representatives and the improvement of Local Administration staff;
- The exchange of experiences and information in all areas of municipal activity;
- The representation of its members before national and international organisations.
