Healthy City

A healthy municipality, according to WHO, is one in which political and civil authorities, public and private institutions and organizations, owners, entrepreneurs, workers and society make constant efforts to improve the living, working and cultural conditions of the population; establish a harmonious relationship with the physical and natural environment and expand community resources to improve coexistence, develop solidarity, co-management and democracy.

WHO CRITERIA

According to WHO (1995), for a city to become healthy it must strive to provide:

  • A clean and safe physical environment;
  • A stable and sustainable ecosystem;
  • High social support, without exploitation;
  • A high degree of social participation;
  • Basic needs met;
  • Access to experiences, resources, contacts, interactions and communications;
  • A diversified and innovative local economy;
  • Pride and respect for biological and cultural heritage;
  • Health services accessible to all and
  • High level of health
