HEALTHY TOURISM

The health of the traveler is an area that deals with the risks, individual and collective, caused by the movement of people and their interaction with various environments. Travel health issues are increasingly being addressed by government sectors, airlines and shipping companies, and travel agencies. However, most of these actions are still restricted to pre-trip vaccination recommendations and risk descriptions posted on websites. Internet.

Interaction between health and tourism

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) provides for interaction between the areas of health and tourism. For the WHO, prevention in the health of the tourist cannot only be the responsibility of the government; this responsibility should also fall on the individual, who needs information about the place to be visited.

We can state that the health of the traveller is seen from two aspects, first from the concern with the individual health of the tourist and second from the point of view of the impacts on public health resulting from the intensification of the flow of tourists and the interaction of the tourist with the environment.

It is essential to address the health of the tourist with a set of actions that should encompass government entities, travel agencies and other operators as well as individuals, both the travellers themselves and those who will receive them.

Observatory of Healthy Tourism in Cape Verde (OTUS)

The Observatory of Healthy Tourism can be seen under the Healthy Cities in Cape Verde programme as a beacon of observation and tourist orientation, which aims, through intelligent mapping, to collect, treat and process data on tourist activity and its interaction with health in its broadest concept:

  • elaboration of the quality charter for tourism products;
  • conducting records on the visitor's profile and length of stay;
  • analysis of the degree of satisfaction according to the visitor's expectations;
  • activities and products in greater demand;
  • cultural and sporting events;
  • monitoring tourist flows and their consequences;
  • positive and negative impacts: economic, environmental and socio-cultural;
  • information on the health status of the country;
  • development of studies and prospective scenarios.
